I love Miss Makima!!!

thinking of which characters I wanted to make fan shrines for, I knew I had to make my first one for Makima from Chainsaw Man. she is true evil, but also deeply complex and emotional in her own right. Tatsuki Fujimoto puts so much love into her character, and she jumps off the page (and into my heart) .

just to get it out of the way, while I love her character that doesn't mean I condone the trauma she inflicts on Denji! She's an amazing villain!

Facts & Analysis of Makima

  • Makima was the first character Fujimoto-san conceptualized. In various interviews he has cited Haruko from 'Fooly Cooly' and Benten from 'The Eccentric Family' as inspirations for her characterization. Haruko is a eccentric and manipulative character who takes advantage of the young male leads blossoming sexuality to utilize him as a weapon. Benten is an "unfathomable higher being", whose profound sadness cannot be conceptualized by mere humans.
  • Makima is also utilized as a symbol of the missing mother figure in Denji's life -- removing the 'ki' from her name leaves you with only Mama. Denji never knew his mother since she died at a young age.
  • Between the implications that Makima was raised by the Japanese government and her comparison of humans to dogs, it is easy to infer that the only form of 'love' she has ever experienced and understood is in the form of blind obedience.
  • Makima seeks to use Chainsaw Man as a means to remove the problems of humanity from the world, such as War, Death and Hunger. These are direct call outs to the fear humanity holds for her sisters of the Four Horseman. Her desire is not to make earth utopia for humanity, but rather it seems her goal is to elevate humans to her level, so she may experience her biggest desires of love and family without fear controlling those around her. While her plan would potentially benefit humanity, her core is self serving.
  • The deep love and obsession she feels towards Pochita, towards Chainsaw Man, is rooted in her own self loathing. It's clear when her deepest desires are revealed that Makima desperately wishes to shed herself of the control she holds, but is also ultimately afraid to do that, because control is all she has ever known. This is why her desire to be eaten by Chainsaw Man is contradictory -- she wants to be consumed by him so that he is easier to control, but she also explains to Denji that any Devil eaten by Chainsaw Man has their name erased from history.
